Social Studies Sixth grade social studies curriculum follows the guidelines set forth under the Kansas State Curricular Standards. Four main topics apply to ancient times: geography, history, economics, and government/civics. All topics are taught in relation to four ancient river civilizations, Mesopotamia (present day Iraq), the Nile Valley in Egypt, the Indus Valley (ancient western India), and the Huang He Valley in far eastern China. These topics are also studied in relation to ancient Greece and Rome. Additional subjects covered are an historical perspective on five major world religions and five different types of government. Skills the students use include reading for meaning, sequencing events, vocabulary work, and writing to describe and explain.

Science -  Sixth grade science will study astronomy, physics, the environment, and scientific method. Specific topics include gravity, forces, machines, energy, the solar system, stars and star groups, cycles and biomes. Student will complete projects while studying the solar system and energy, and complete a science fair simulation.

Foundations - Foundations is a class that is intended to teach students skills and techniques that will help them to be successful the middle school and in life beyond. Two major ideas that this class is designed around are the Habits of Mind (www.habitsofmind.org) and the Growth Mindset (http://mindsetonline.com). Both describe the belief that it is effort and hard work that develops success. We will learn about topics such as study skills, note taking, research methods, public speaking, among others.

Math- This course is the 7th grade core math class, and will extend students’ knowledge from previous years.  It will also provide understanding of new topics such as percents, decimals, and fractions, negative numbers, proportional reasoning, algebraic understanding, variable relationships, and scale.  This course will depend highly upon group work and cooperative learning!  It is a conceptual based approach to mathematical concepts.

Accelerated Math- This class is for 6th graders who are performing above the 6th grade level and are motivated to participate in an accelerated class.  6th and a portion of 7th grade curriculum is covered in one year.  Students must qualify for this class through a screening process.  Students will learn the language of mathematics, its patterns of thinking and concepts including integers, solving equations, factors and fractions, rational numbers, inequalities, graphing, ratio, proportion and percent, statistics, two-dimensional measurements, and beginning algebra.  A problem-based model of instruction is used for teaching.

Math Lab- The purpose of this course is to reinforce concepts and skills for students who need additional time to understand mathematical concepts.  The curriculum spans a wide range of topics; but, special emphasis is given to decimal, fraction, algebra, integer (positive and negative numbers) and percent operations.  This is an additional math class which parallels topics covered in the core math class. The curriculum of the class is flexible, based on the needs of the students.  All work is completed in class; therefore, no homework is assigned.

Pre-Algebra- This class is for 7th graders who are performing above the 7th grade level and are motivated to participate in an accelerated class. 7th and 8th grade curriculum is covered in one year. 8th Grade Math  This course is the 8th grade core math class and will utilize skills the students learned in previous years. We will cover pre-algebra concepts such as Linear Equations, Exponential Relationships, the Pythagorean Theorem, and Data & Statistics. This course will depend highly upon group work and cooperative learning.  It is a problem-based conceptual approach to mathematical concepts.

Integrated Geometry-  This class is an 8th grade accelerated class.  The curriculum is the same as the sophomore level geometry taught at the high school.

Business Skills

The Business Skills class is designed to give students an overview of the business, marketing and financial career cluster occupations.  Students will develop an understanding of how academic skills in mathematics, economics, and written and oral communications are integral components of success in these occupations.  The topics covered in the Middle School Business Skills class are as follows:  Business Law; Communication Skills; Customer Relations; Introduction to Economics; Emotional Intelligence; Entrepreneurship;  Financial Analysis; Information Management; Marketing; and Professional Development. Computer Applications:

There are a variety of topics covered in Computer Applications class at Wamego Middle School and all these topics build on student’s basic level of knowledge they obtained as a Wamego elementary student.  Those foundations are expanded upon at the middle school level so when the student enters Wamego High School they are ready for more in-depth comprehension of those topical areas.  The topics covered in Middle School Computer Applications are as follows:  History of Computers, Internet Safety, Computer Literacy, Copyright laws and plagiarism, Review of Keyboarding, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, and MS Publisher.

Keyboarding:

Students will demonstrate the ability to key alphabetic copy using proper technique and touch typing.  Students will also demonstrate the ability to process documents that are acceptable in format and error detection/correction in MS Word. They will also increase speed and accuracy in keying alphabetic copy.

Multimedia:

Students will learn how to market, sell and produce the Wamego Middle School Yearbook.  We will also learn how to use MS Publisher, video production, and learn newspaper production.  Students will learn various areas of study that will equip them with the skills necessary to complete individual and team projects.  It is the student’s responsibility to utilize these skills to create and problem solve independently with excellence and creativity.

  Students at the middle school level are encouraged to lead a healthy lifestyle through physical fitness.  Students are responsible for their own learning through active participation.  Every day the students make choices to do their personal best or what’s best for the group.  They are encouraged to continually challenge each other as well as team members.  Good sportsmanship is stressed, as well as safety, rules, personal hygiene, and care and use of equipment.

These include: Graphic Communications, Dynamic Earth, Engineering Bridges, Energy Power & Mechanics, Weights & Measures, Flight, Research & Design, Simple Machines, Electricity, and Weather.

Band/Music

Band - Band is a year long elective course, with students having completed some instrumental instruction prior to enrollment in class. WMS has three bands, divided by 6th, 7th, and 8th grade level.  Students will need to furnish their own instruments, however a few of the larger instruments are available for rental from
