Goals for 2014-2015

The Wamego High School Site Council decided on the following School Improvement Goals for 2014-2015.

Target Goal #1                All students will improve reading comprehension skills and vocabulary skills.

Target Goal #2                  All students will improve math skills.

Target Goal #3                 All students will improve writing skills.

GOAL #1

The WHS Site Council will continue to monitor the school improvement plan to meet and exceed AYP test results and to reduce the student dropout rate.

This goal specifically addresses the following school improvement goals:

  • All students will improve reading comprehension skills and vocabulary skills.
  • All students will improve math skills.
  • All students will improve writing skills.

 ACTIVITIES:

  • The WHS Site Council will monitor the Virtual Prescriptive Learning Lab regularly.
      • Report will take place in the spring of 2011

  • The WHS Site Council will use data on a regular basis to monitor the progress of students.
      • At the October site council meeting Mr. Winter reported the state assessment result to the council.  WHS met all AYP and QPA requirements and met the standard of excellence in reading and science.  ACT scores are also reported with WHS students scoring above the state average in all areas.

GOAL #2

The WHS Site Council  will continue to support Mentoring, Freshman Transitioning,  Independent Study,  the Bully Prevention Program known as Live R.E.D. (Respect Everyone Daily), and Career Exploration.

This goal specifically addresses the following school improvement goals:

  • All students will improve reading comprehension skills and vocabulary skills.
  • All students will improve math skills.
  • All students will improve writing skills.

ACTIVITIES:

  •  Mentoring:  Students, Coordinators and Mentors will be invited to attend a WHS Site Council meeting to share their mentoring experiences:  Seniors during first quarter, juniors during second quarter, sophomores during third quarter, and freshmen during fourth quarter to coincide with the freshman transitioning Site Council Meeting.

    • October 6, Counselor Shelley Rickstrew and Mentoring Co-Founder Kathleen McPeak spoke to the group about mentoring.  WHS Site Council had studied mentoring for 2 or 3 years before implementing it at WHS.  The program relies on volunteers who have 4 to 5 students assigned to them.  Mentoring was introduced one grade level per year with the class of 2005 being the first mentored class to graduate.  Originally Mentoring Coordinator was a paid position.   Susan Symons was the first coordinator and she was followed by Becky Wassom.  Mentoring Coordinator is no longer a paid position.  Kathleen McPeak has been a non-salaried leader for ten years. So far this year the mentoring program needs 4 more volunteers to have enough mentors for the freshman class.  Some people are also needed in leadership positions.  The WHS Mentoring Program has been very successful.  Only WHS has mentors for all of its students.    An appeal was made to the Site Council to help find individuals to be freshman class mentors and mentoring program leaders.  It is best for students to have the same mentor for all 4 years of high school. The first meeting for freshman mentoring is scheduled for November 4.

  • Freshman Transitioning:  Freshman parents, students, and faculty members will be invited to attend a WHS Site Council meeting to share information.

  •  Independent Study:   Students will be invited to present their projects to the WHS Site Council January meeting. If the student cannot attend, he/she could provide a videotaped presentation.

  • Live R.E.D. Program:  The guidance counselor, students (if available), and committee members will be invited to share information and experiences.  Each student and his/her parent(s) will have a contact/liaison person should a concern arise.  The student’s SIP teacher would be the logical contact/liaison since the student has the same SIP teacher all four years.

    • At the November meeting Danielle Borth, Chair for the Live R.E.D. committee presented the yearly activities planned for 2010/11.  She also discussed the school kick off activity.  The Boys and Girls Club of Manhattan presented NetSmartz, a program designed to educate students about the do and don’ts of social networking.  A parent session was also offered to all parents of USD 320 during parent-teacher conferences in September.

  • Career Exploration:  WHS counselors will report to the WHS Site Council regarding career exploration activities available to students and the number who availed themselves of these.

GOAL #3

The WHS Site Council will monitor the new Parent/Teacher Conference format and the format for student enrollment.

This goal specifically addresses the following school improvement goals:

  • All students will improve reading comprehension skills and vocabulary skills.
  • All students will improve math skills.
  • All students will improve writing skills.

ACTIVITIES:

  • The WHS Site Council recommends having a time early next fall (2011) – possibly one hour before the start of the Fall Open House--to have parents of Freshmen and other students new to WHS to come with their students to learn where their student’s classrooms are and to meet his/her teachers.

  •  The WHS Site Council will explore options for holding student enrollment in the spring.

Progress of these activities will be reported in the spring.
