The guidance staff interacts with students as needed through classroom presentations, small groups, parent meetings and individually.  The guidance staff strives to partner with teachers and family members as much as possible to assist students in being successful.  They can also provide resources to parents for other services that might be beneficial, such as community health resources and professional counseling.  The following is a list of student support programs offered by the WHS Guidance Department.

Personalized Enrollment

In an effort to partner with parents on academic and career goal-setting, all students are individually enrolled during a 30-minute appointment, involving the counselor, student and parent.  Students and their families are provided a course description booklet and an enrollment guide prior to the meeting.  During the enrollment appointment, students choose classes as well as discuss post-high school options.  In addition, the counselor reviews graduation, Regent’s and State Scholar Curriculum requirements.

Peer Counselors

Mrs. Rickstrew teaches a class of peer counselors, who are students chosen by their peers as good listeners and resources to help other students.  They are extensively trained in listening to and supporting other students.  They host new student parties, assist in presentations for middle school transition, help train middle school peer helpers, and are available as needed to support individual students in the school.  They also assist with special projects and presentations for the school.

Link Crew

The guidance office is involved in leading Link Crew, a group of upper-classmen who volunteer and are trained to work extensively with incoming freshmen to help them be successful during their first year of high school.

BIGS in Schools

Students can apply to be a Big Brother or Big Sister through the guidance office and the school-based Bigs program.

Olweus Bullying Prevention Program

The guidance staff supports the school’s anti-bullying program and often schedules presentations to support its implementation in the school.

Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)

The guidance office sponsors a local chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions, in an effort to educate students about making smart decisions concerning the use of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.

Community Mentoring Program

Guidance staff supports the community mentoring program.  Once a month each student meets in a small group with other students in their grade and a community mentor.  They have lunch together and complete the month’s mentoring activity.  The activities begin in the freshmen year to build trust and eventually work through problem-solving, networking, career information, and life planning.  Students remain in the same mentoring group throughout the four years of high school.  This is designed to allow students to meet an additional adult who can provide support and information and also allow community members the opportunity to interact in the school and develop relationships with our students.
